Physics is the study of the fundamental laws that govern all natural phenomena. It is the science that attempts to describe how nature works, using the language of Mathematics.

The subject matter ranges from aspects of astronomy to the behaviour of nuclei of radioactive atoms and also includes the traditional topics of forces and motion, waves, electricity and its generation and electromagnetism. The importance of Physics in domestic, industrial and environmental contexts is emphasised and students appreciate the role of Physics in improving the quality of life.

A Level Physics is an optional subject available to students in the 6th Form. The main areas covered are: mechanics, materials, waves, electricity, electromagnetism, particle physics, thermodynamics, and astrophysics.

Emphasis is placed on practical work and students develop their practical skills through the use of a variety of techniques including ICT and video analysis.

The importance of Physics to society today is most easily represented by our reliance on technologies which are changing our lives – from lasers to computers, DVD’s to iPods, mobile phones, optical fibre networks, and sustainable energy solutions.

Students of Physics are problem solvers and possess curious, questioning minds. A successful Physics student will usually possess excellent analytical, quantitative and problem solving skills. He or she will have the ability to deploy a range of experimental and analytical skills, synthesize and analyse large quantities of data and present their conclusions in an easily understandable form. These are highly exportable skills that can be applied in a wide spectrum of careers where an ability to think analytically is a great asset.
