La Casa de Bernarda Alba

Form 5 GCSE Spanish students recently had the  enriching experience of watching a live performance of ‘La Casa de Bernarda Alba’, enhancing their understanding of this cornerstone of Spanish literature. Federico García Lorca’s play, written in 1936, tells the story of Bernarda Alba, a strict and authoritarian widowwho imposes an eight-year period of mourning following the death of her second husband. Her five daughters are confined to the house, denied personal
freedom, and subjected to her rigid control.

The narrative explores themes of repression, social convention, desire, and the struggle for autonomy, highlighting the tensions between individual longing and societal expectations in early 20th-century rural Spain.

Watching the theatrical adaptation allowed students to witness the emotional intensity of the characters, the subtle interplay of power and resistance within the family, and Lorca’s use of symbolism, dialogue, and stagecraft to convey psychological and social conflict.

This immersive experience not only reinforced students’ comprehension of the text but also brought the cultural and historical context of the play to life, providing invaluable support for their GCSE studies in Spanish language and literature.
