J3 visit the mines of Gavá

As part of their Science topic on Rocks, J3 took their learning beyond the classroom with an exciting visit to the prehistoric Mines of Gavà. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of how rocks and minerals have been used throughout history, directly linking to their studies of rock formation,
properties, and uses within the science curriculum.

During the visit, pupils discovered how Neolithic communities lived and explored the ways in which they used rocks to craft everyday tools and objects. They learned about variscite, a striking green mineral mined in the area thousands of years ago and used to make jewellery—an early example of humans identifying and utilising natural resources.

To consolidate their learning, the children took part in a practical workshop, creating their own stone necklaces, which helped them appreciate the skill and creativity of prehistoric people. The trip brought their classroom learning to life, allowing them to make meaningful connections between science, history, and human innovation.
