The Kensington Award, inspired by the UK Duke of Edinburgh Award, challenges students to develop new skills, embrace activities, and contribute their time to helping others. The final step in this transformative journey is the expedition—a test of resilience, teamwork, and practical skills.
This year, six dedicated Form 5 students undertook the expedition, carrying 60-litre rucksacks packed with camping equipment and food. On a warm October day, they embarked on routes they had meticulously planned, applying the navigation and risk assessment skills they learned in after-school sessions.
One group set off from Olivella, marking checkpoints and meal breaks along the way. Their hike included documenting and sketching plant species, enhancing their understanding of local flora. Meanwhile, the second group started in Garraf, observing changes in tree species and applying mathematical skills to estimate tree heights at various points.
After 7 hours and over 18 kilometers of hiking, both groups arrived at Camping Garrofer, tired but in high spirits. They pitched their tents, prepared nutritious meals, and reflected on their accomplishments. The next day, a shorter hike brought them to the Vilanova train station, marking the end of their journey.
We are incredibly proud of the students’ commitment to the Kensington Award. Their teamwork, problem-solving, and perseverance over the past months have been exceptional. We hope they proudly display their achievements and cherish the prestigious Kensington Award trophy as a symbol of their hard work.
