‘UNDER SIEGE’ AT THE CCCB

HISTORY ‘A’ LEVEL STUDENTS ATTEND LECTURE AT THE CCCB.
The History Department led by Mr. C. Mason organised an evening visit to the ‘Centre de Cultura Contemporanea de Barcelona’ (CCCB) on Thursday 25th September.
The CCCB is running a series of exhibitions, lectures and conferences within its ‘Under Siege’ programme. Mr. Ahron Bregman, a political scientist and teaching fellow in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London delivered a lecture on ‘Gaza, The Permanent Siege´. Bregman served in the Israeli Defence Forces for six years and participated in the 1982 Lebanon War, after which he was a parliamentary assistant in the Knesset. He has written several books on the history of his country and the conflict with Palestine, among them Cursed Victory: A History of Israel and the Occupied Territories. Professor Bregman also conducted a Q&A session taking questions from attendees, many of whom were university students specialising on the Middle East.
The lecture was of great benefit to Sixth Form students who cover the period in their Unit 1 exam (The Expansion and Challenge of Nationalism: The Middle East, 1945-2001 The State of Israel and Arab Nationalism) as it covered the historical context within the region and offered insight into the current situation and solutions to end the present day crisis.
The ‘Under Siege’ programme runs until the 9th November. Further information can be found on the CCCB website.
